Vision : To develop a cadre of young social and business entrepreneurs in the country by
increasing their access to skills and knowledge, as well as to expert mentorship services .
Background : A majority of the unemployed youth in Mauritius has never held a job, have failed
primary or secondary school education, have no technical or vocational training. There is labor
shortage, and there is a need for skill development of the youth to match the gaps between the
demand and existing skills.
About the Network : The YES Mauritius Network is hosted by Halley Movement and is
working for various community based programs such as Mentorship for Young Entrepreneurs,
Child Rights, Internet Safety for Children and Young People and the Elderly. Their activities
include advocacy, training, research and publication of educational materials.
Current Major Initiatives:
- Mentoring Young Entrepreneurs is part of the regional SADC program monitored by
Youth Development Network (YDN) from South Africa. The mentors counsel their
protégées in connection with bookkeeping, funds management, management of
business
- Child Safety Online – research study on the impact of the internet on children.
- Mentorship program for young entrepreneurs
- Awareness campaigns on Human Rights issues
- Initiating Young Entrepreneurs to Business Skills
- Training of the Elderly for child welfare programs.
Key Accomplishments :
- Have partnership with YDN and British High Commission and various other embassies
in Mauritius.
- Over 100 young entrepreneurs have been initiated to business skills. The government
of Mauritius is also another partner and has agreed to give loans to the young
entrepreneurs at low interest rates. Loans have been used to further the business
- The Mentorship Program has been recognized in the country and has brought
volunteers from multiple sectors. Not only have mentors expressed their desire to
volunteer, but some of the mentors expect their protégées to work for them at the end of
the program. The program has developed business skills and leadership skills including
enhancing communication skills
