Vision : To improve the young people livehoods especially from vulnerable areas taking into
account the environmental, social and economic impacts in the country.
Background : Peru has 28,220,764 inhabitants in the country. The youth (among 15 and 19
years) represents the 28% of the peruvian population according to the National Census of
2007. The unemployment situation of the young people is critical as 60% of the economically
active population of youth is unoccupied.
About the Network : YES Peru was created in 2002. Since that time VIDA is a non profit
organization founded on 1990, and has been the YES Peru host agency. YES Peru has
dedicated last years in projects with renewable energy, ITC, gender equity and social, cultural
and economical rights. Vida supports the network to provide better living conditions for the poor
of the country through the development of clean technologies and the improvement of
environmental .
Current Major Initiatives :
- A new Digital Center has been established. The process started in Lima (2006) with the
YES Peru project known as the Infocentre Digital Literacy. This space has been created
to continue the learning process that originally had the support of Microsoft Unlimited
Program. Now it has been moved to the Human Settlement VIctor Raul Haya de la
Torre (Callao).
- YES Peru host agency realizing the impact of the negative environment, is focusing on
the very hard conditions of many young people in diverse parts of Peru, but mainly in
Callao. It works in the place called “Zone of Lead of Callao” where more than 10 000
children are sick due to this condition. Many of these children are now suffering, not
being able to get jobs and are working in the black market.
- YES Peru host agency has created over 600 temporary jobs, considering gender equity.
Around U.S. $52,266 have been moved through this initiative.
- YES Peru is working in the creation of the Latin America Network of Renewable Enegy,
for the experience It had with BIOSOL, an initiative funded by the GEF and EDC (former
YES Campaign manager), and other projects and events organized in the past. For the
YES Panama Forum, CAREC (Committee of Training Resources Management)
produced press material in this issue enhancing the youth participation in the creation of“green jobs” in the renewable energy sectors. This material is being used currently in
the events and presentations made in Peru. A video about the “renewable energy and
government compromise” was produced. Also VIDA, through the GEF project edited an
audiovisual material on biogas and solar energy. In Panama the initiative of the Network
of Renewable Energy was launched.
- YES Peru is working to relate all its expertise in the green sector towards YES 2010.
Key Accomplishments :
- YES Peru host agency, coordinates with key stakeholders of the private sector,
government and neighborhood organizations. Its impact include the national, province
and local levels and have an important support for the local and national media.
- The strengths of the YES Peru networks are entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability
and the 5 sectors in renewable energy and ITC.
